Pure Art

The name Art in fact is very pure. Here the name "Pure Art" is try to emphasize it is different to applied Art. Like Mathematics subject, we have Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, and like the names for Science and Technology. From my point of view, Technology is the application of Science. Science can be just related to our thinking for reasons, do not necessarily to take care of any surroundings around us such as economics, marketing, politics and any others things for practical need. It can just be to find "Why?" related to the objects in the universe. For the name Technology, it is mainly to find ways to apply the found reasons (or principles, ideas, concepts) to build things suitable to people's practical need.

Similarly, we can apply "pure art" to paintings, carving, music, literature, speaking languages, dancing, Chinese Kungfu,  or some more practical usage such as design in different items. "Pure art" should be the common points that can be applied to them.

For I started to think of the name "Pure Art", it is  because after listening to Bach's music for certain time, it seems that his music consists of a great deal of these elements related to pure art. It seems to be a strange and limited subject name .

One of the elements of Pure Art is Purity. Purity means unique, clear, no other elements in the concerned set of elements. It seems easy to understand. Pure water, pure gold, purity in diamond, we always want a single and attractive element that no other can hinder our incentive to pursue. It is always a difficult one because of its purity. Single, unique, only one that exists in the world becomes a super one. Purity in sound for a singer perhaps is also audience want. Musical instruments that can produce nearly pure sound also obtain high price.

One in art for purity difficult to understand is our mind. Our mind is difficult to reach a line in a certain period. Famous performers or workers for art always want to be trained in this direction. Concentration in our mind quite leads us to do things in the most efficient and demonstrating high ability in certain direction of art. Buddhism monks or Christian monks also had such living pattern that they lived in a quiet place, keeping away from other people's society in order to avoid other people's influence. That perhaps can lead those people to have a pure mind. Other training process or exercises in physical body art like Chinese Kun-fu Taiji are also have such aim. Purity of mind is the aim but is difficult to be handled. It is also a kind of happiness that attract people to pursue.

The other is connectivity. The sense in our mind about connectivity is important. It helps us think and appreciate the objects. In writing, the meanings progresses from words and then sentences. After practice with some times in our childish period, we get the meaning not from words but get the meaning from sentences directly. The connection between words and sentences are important for us to interpret what the other people really want to express. For a good piece of writing, the consideration of connectivity is important. In other words, the fluency of the writing is important as a criterion to assess whether it is good piece or not a good piece of writing. Not only among sentences, but also among paragraphs and then whole piece of the writing. In our presentation of languages, it is the same requirement to express our meanings to other people in understanding or other tentative purpose.

The character of connectivity happens to dances, paintings, music, performances, and etc. The connectivity is related to time, our mind to accept and appreciate the movement of hands, legs, heads or just whole body motion in dances. In paintings, the movement of eyes and the interpretation of the changes of colors, characters and structure of objects, and etc. In music, the changes of volumes and tones, the rhythm, melody, harmony, and etc. In performance, the whole story, appearance,  expression power, and etc. They are the same cases for others in art.

The other is variation. That is changing. Sometimes it is in a very slow changing and sometimes it is in a rapid changing. Changing can be in a single direction (in one dimension meaning), changing in 2D (i.e. circle area expansion), changing in 3D (i.e. spherical expansion), or we think surface area variation in 3D (touching our face with our hand in a certain surface area region).

All things in our world is under changing according to certain rules. some [Some] are detectable and some are not. Some variation makes us happy, some makes us sad and so on. In writing, we can note the changing: from introduction to development and then conclusion, or in some other forms. The variation makes people like to see the expected or unexpected coming events. For painting, it is also the same case. When we move our eyes to look at the surface of paints, our mind from experienced knowledge or feeling will affect our emotion. We may appreciate the work or just hate, be frightened or some other feelings towards the painting work. For music, it is the same but this time from hearing, the variation of sound, i.e. melody, rhythm, loudness, and etc, to affect our emotion or the interpretation of the meaning of a certain music. For dancing, the variation of motion with our hands, legs, body and head affects our feelings.

For arts we want a good and beautiful variation, no matter whether it is slow, rapid or in other forms of change.        .

The other is harmony. Our world is in harmony system. Mountains, rivers, seas, clouds, and etc are in harmony system. They are related to each other. Each one has its own development, but also each one depends on some others. Sometimes they make conflicts and sometimes they help each other. Mostly we can think they more or less are living with each other. Single bow pulling on string with violin and then next another pulling can be treated as the reply to previous pulling. Single color comes next to the other can be thought as some relation involved to previous one. Two violins, or the whole orchestrate team can make a harmony system but it becomes more and more complicated. Paintings from dots and lines form a structure, and structure with other structures form another larger structure. The existence among them form a harmony system.

The other is balance. Normally what we think is that there is something always has tendency to oppose something. Something like good and bad, bright and dark, long and short. Some are judgment; some are feeling; some comes from nature. Symmetry in our body - left and right; or animal bodies. The bodies of plants looks not so symmetric. But according some free natural rules, we can still think they are balance.

C.F. Lau 3 Jan 2011   [12 May 2011]

For judgment, like good and bad, we normally have a reference level in our mind. The level may be unclear. Over a certain level we say it is good and below some level we say it is bad. The reference level may be changed from time to time in order to make a balance for good or bad according to a person's attitude or experience. In our living environment, some rules or regulations guide us to say what is good and what is not good. These rules or regulations are set up by those people who think they are suitable for certain purpose such as for easy management or for the future growth or any thing else. Bright and dark are for feelings such as bright period or dark period, Bright and dark comes from nature such as having sun light is bright, no sun light is dark, by looking at the sky. Long and short can be a measurement for length. However, it can also be a feeling from a period such as a long time or a short time have not been seen each other. There is also a reference level in our mind to classify over a certain period we will say it is long and below a certain period we will say it is short. Balancing is naturally established in our mind. Balance exists in our nature such as cold and hot weather, one force in one direction, the other exists in opposite direction. It does not necessarily mean in one dimension, it normally exits in 3 dimensions. Balancing is an inherent tendency for the changing and certain variation can be due to the reaction for the change of environment or due to the self sudden variation generated by the object itself.

C.F. Lau 2Jul 2011

Since the idea of balancing or the actual thing exists in our world, it affects our mind of thinking or our attitude towards the concept of balancing. In writing a story, we would have some good people and some bad people, some happiness and some sadness and etc. In dancing, turning left and turning right, up and down, rotation clockwise and rotation anticlockwise, slowly and rapidly and etc. In music, it is the same we can hear some fast movement and slow movement, soft and hard sound, sudden rise and sudden drop down, smooth and sharp sound (although sharp sound might be thought as not a good thing, it is still and necessarily be used and it can become a good thing). In painting we can have a smooth brushing or sharp brushing; using dark and light colours depends on each different situations and etc.

The point is the world consists all these balancing things, in art no doubt it is being involved and considered.

The next subject to be discussed is exactness. It is difficult to represent the exactness in art.

C.F. Lau 12 Sept 2011

A natural object normally exists in the world in 3 dimensions. What we are looking at them is its surface. The change of their different shapes in different areas are not easily detected by our mind and to give our accurate analysis. Surprisingly, we people have tremendous detection power to recognize different faces of people. Over 7 billions people in this world, but they are all of different faces to be recognized. I think it is mainly due to the different characteristics or properties on our faces and the combination of them to form a unique part to be recognized. For the exactness of the shape, it is difficult to be described in speaking or written language, even in paintings. Sometimes sculptures may be considered to do better. However, it is not the real case. Just take an example to ask a sculptor to form a human body or just a face from his/her memory without looking at the real body in front of him/her. Then the sculpture produced normally is an approximate shape, not the exact one. There must be some deviation from the real object. Someone may think of generating a mould or taking photos. In this case, it does not mean people know the shape of the object, it only tells that we can form a copy from technology. The art consists of exactness. It means that the exactness can be also the objective and it can also be considered as a factor for a good piece of art work. However, real exactness should not exist in art work. The closer approximation the better is.

C.F. Lau 15 Dec 2011

For exactness, it is very difficult to reach our aim. The previous description is only for the consideration of shapes. Others like our feelings. Something such as happiness, sadness, breaking heart feelings, and etc are also difficult to be sent to audience in an exact form. In writing, painting, dancing, the authors want to tell something, or just to describe something, they have to use their words, the construction of their words, their sense and knowledge to build up messages, from their intention or not intention to present their meanings. For painters, they use their brushes, pencils, different colours, papers or canvas to describe something or from their sense to do something. In fact it also involves some constructions or structures to do something. For dancing, it is the same to consider the constructions, from one motion to the other motion, or a set of motions using hands, legs, bodies, even heads to represent some messages. The exact things from which the authors want to represent are not easy to communicate to their audience.

C.F. Lau 27 Mar 2012

On the contrary, as the exactness is not possible to achieve, some prediction, approximation, even out of all real situation may be thought to be suitable. Some imagination to some extent may be involved, or totally with all imagination that  something not existing in our world are used in a work. Imagination is the source to create new things.

C.F. Lau 5 Jun 2012

¡@

For the imagination, it may come from the word image, forming an image in our mind. To form an image, it may come from experience, from some reasons to develop an image. For example, we know that from one plus one equals two, then two plus one will equal three. That is from the prediction it should be true and then from later experience it is true. We obtain some rules from our life experience and forming some ideas in our mind. We learned them from our baby and studied in schools, also from our living environment and personality, what we learned before can be used to decide and forecast future. Writing a story, like Harry Potter, some logical and some non-logical events by playing magic, writer and readers form images during writing and reading in minds. From imagination, we can build it by writing, singing, playing instruments in music and construct fantastic building structures in architecture. Normally we think new things being built is called creativity. Then logical thinking in fact can create new ideas. But it is difficult because it needs more energy and knowledge to do it. In this world a lot people did it and learned it from their study. To create an new idea which different from others mostly become impossible. Then most people think in art field is much easy to achieve it.

C.F. Lau 13 Aug 2013

Using a pencil we can draw a picture. A person sitting in front of us that we can draw the picture of the person. It seems difficult because we soon find we cannot control our pencil to draw what we want. The other reason is that we know the 3D structure and some things inside the person very few. Something like that assuming a person is smiling. The process consist of a change of face spatial shape which in turn involves eyes, nose, mouth and others for the change. A lot of changes we have to know so some logical imagination is possible to produce a picture of a smiling person. Breaking the common rule is a kind of creating new things. The other is to find a new rule to build up a system to produce new things.
